Types of Gifts

Funding existing programs and new opportunities to benefit our NFED families is an ongoing challenge. With your help, we can assure that vital programs will remain in place for the future. There are many different types of gifts that you could give to support the NFED. Donations to the NFED are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Here are a few ways to give to the Foundation:

General Donations

Support the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias family services and education efforts by making a general contribution.

Honoraria and Memorial Gifts

In Memoria – Remember someone close to you by making a gift in their memory.

In Honor – Help children affected by ectodermal dysplasia syndromes by donating in honor of someone who has made a difference in your life.

You can make a gift to the NFED in memory of a deceased loved one or in honor of a special person or occasion such as a birthday or anniversary. It is a thoughtful way to honor your friends and loved ones while at the same time helping those individuals affected by ectodermal dysplasia syndromes. The NFED will send a card to the honoree or to the family of the deceased acknowledging your gift.

Matching Gifts

Double Your Donation! Many companies offer Matching Gifts Program as a way to encourage employees to contribute to charitable organizations. Most of these match dollar for dollar and some will even double or triple the amount of your gift. Ask your company's personnel department to learn if they offer such a program. If they do, submit their form with your donation.

Planned Gifts

You can meet your financial goals while helping individuals affected by ectodermal dysplasia syndromes. Planned Giving involves integrating a donor's charitable gift into his or her overall financial, tax, and estate planning objectives so as to maximize benefits to both the donor and the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias. Planned gifts typically come from a donor's assets rather than income, and can be either outright or deferred. The NFED highly recommends that donors consult with their own tax or legal advisors prior to making a planned gift. Here is some basic information on different types of planned gifts.

Gifts of securities – A gift of appreciated securities held for more than one year may bring significant benefits to you as a contributor to the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias, such as:

  • Entitling you to a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the gifted securities as of the date of the gift.
  • Eliminating capital gains tax that would ordinarily become due if you had sold the appreciated securities on the open market and donated the proceeds from the sale to charity.
  • Claiming your charitable deduction against up to 30% of your adjusted gross income.
  • Providing a way to help you to achieve your long-term financial objective of reducing your income and estate taxes.
  • Giving by Will – A will is the easiest and most effective means to ensure that you fully provide for your family and that your assets are distributed as you wish. Gifts by will, or bequests, both large and small, are important to the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias. A bequest through your will also provides continuing support of the ongoing work of the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias. This kind of gift assures that the Foundation will be able to serve future generations of children affected by ED.

After providing for your loved ones, you may decide to give a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or all or part of what remains after individuals have been remembered. Here are sample bequests:

I give and bequeath to the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias, a nonprofit corporation, organized under the state of Illinois, and having its principle office at 410 E. Main St., P.O. Box 114, Mascoutah, IL 62258-0114, all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, real, personal, and mixed, to be used for general purposes of the organization.

A gift to the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias through your will has several advantages:

  • Charitable gifts made through your will are 100 percent deductible for estate tax purposes
  • A charitable bequest may place your estate in a lower estate tax bracket
  • You may specify that your bequest is used for general purposes of the Society or for a particular area of interest
  • Giving through Life Insurance – Gifts through life Insurance allow you to make a gift of assets that may no longer be needed for your family's security.

Giving through Retirement Plans – Individual retirement plans, pension and profit-sharing plans or other methods of saving for retirement are rapidly becoming appealing sources of charitable gifts because of the very large balances in some plans and the substantial taxes that may be applicable.

You should always consult with your financial or legal advisor before initiating a charitable gift arrangement.
