Did you know that the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias (NFED) currently has a small but mighty group of 17 donors that have their employers match their donation? Since 2016, these companies have donated over $3,300 matching gift dollars paid and almost $4,000 matching gift dollars pledged. Almost $10,000 total has been given to the NFED through employer matching gift programs.
While we have 17 current matching gift corporations, there are over 1,300 companies in the U.S. who match gifts. Over 65% of Fortune 500 Companies have a matching gift program. Billions of dollars are left untapped just waiting for their employers to take the first step.
You may be saying to yourself, “Wow! I wonder if my employer has this program. But, what is a matching gift?”
A matching gift is a donation from a corporation that is the same amount (or sometimes lower or higher) as a donation from their employer to the same charity of the employee’s choice. So basically, when an employee makes a donation and has it matched by their employer, they are doubling their original donation without any cost to them and with minimal effort.

Here are eight easy steps to take if your employer has a matching gift program:
First make a donation to the NFED online or to the NFED office at 6 Executive Dr, Ste 2, Fairview Heights, IL 62208.
Talk to your employer’s Human Resource or Charitable Giving Department to let them know you are interested in having your donation matched.
Fill out your employer’s matching gift form either on paper or online. This usually includes the donation amount, the organization’s name and for what cause.
Notify the NFED to complete the form. This information usually includes a tax identification number, the mission and a signature from a staff member or Executive Director.
The NFED then completes the form and sends it back to your employer’s HR or Charitable Giving contact.
They then send a check to the NFED matching your donation! Thank you!
The NFED sends a letter to you and your employer separately thanking both of you for your thoughtful gift. Your employer gets a tax deduction for the matching gift. You get a tax deduction for your original gift.
Some employers also match volunteer hours with a contribution. If you volunteer for the NFED, check to see if your employer matches volunteer hours as well. You can double your good all-around for all of your NFED efforts!
Smaller mom and pop businesses also contribute through a matching gift program. The only way to find out is to ask.
