If you are of a certain age, you likely watched that iconic sit-com in the 1980s, Cheers. The show’s theme song was equally iconic and you may be singing it in your head as you read this.
I was thinking about the NFED Family Conference this summer in Minneapolis from July 10-12!, and the song lyrics came to me. They capture the essence of why you should come to the Conference! I won’t subject you to my singing, but check out these lyrics.
Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you’ve got
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot
Wouldn’t you like to get away?
Sometimes you wanna go
Where everybody knows your name
And they’re always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see
Our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name
Guess what? The place you need to get away to is the NFED Family Conference from July 10-12! You will quickly find that our caring staff and veteran families will make you feel like you are among friends – because you are!
I’m biased about how fantastic conferences are because I’ve been privileged to attend 20 of them! I’ve seen first hand how transformative they can be. But don’t just take my word for it. Listen to what others have to say.
Taking a Break From All Your Worries Sure Would Help a Lot
Sometimes, having a rare disorder can be “a lot”. We’ve built into the Conference plenty of social time to relax and get to one another by the pool. Kids and teens will have their own fun activities and time to hang out. Cameron, who is affected by Goltz syndrome, talks about the relief he found coming to Conferences when he was younger.
Wouldn’t You Like to Get Away
Minneapolis is beautiful in the summer. It would be the perfect opportunity to plan a vacation before or after the Conference and explore the beautiful state while you’re there. Our Conference hosts, Karl and Nancy, invite you to attend. Karl and their daughter, Sammi, have an unknown type of ectodermal dysplasia.
Sometimes You Wanna Go Where Everybody Knows Your Name
We think Charlie Richter wins the prize for the person who has attended the most Family Conferences! Since his mom founded the NFED 43 years ago, he’s attended almost every one. For this reason, everyone typically knows his name or learns it quickly! Will you see Charlie, who is affected by x-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED) in Minneapolis? Listen to find out if instead of yelling, “NORM”, you can yell “CHARLIE” when you arrive. If you have been to a Conference before, you can look forward to us yelling your name when we see you!
And They’re Always Glad You Came
Sure, you will have many educational workshops to attend and learn best practices. The information may even feel overwhelming at times! But, you will be surrounded by families, staff and doctors who will listen and provide support if that’s what you need. And we are also looking forward to learning from you and your experience! Now a college student, Victor shares how attending Conference helped him when he was growing up with XLHED.
You Wanna Be Where You Can See Our Troubles Are All the Same
If you have a child affected by ectodermal dysplasia, you likely have a million questions. You may feel scared about the future and the unknown. Or, you may be an adult who lives with the condition and feel like no one else understands. That’s the beauty of the Family Conference. Certainly, each person is unique. But, there will be other parents and other affected individuals who can relate to what you are going through. Connecting with them will help you breathe a sigh of relief. Listen as Jeremy talks about his experience at his first Family Conference. His son is affected by XLHED.
