Headshot of Dr. Kaminsky

The National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias (NFED) is proud to welcome Stephen Kaminsky, Ph.D. to our Scientific Advisory Council (SAC). The SAC is a team of experts who help guide our research program that could lead to better treatments for ectodermal dysplasias.

A Leader in Gene Therapy

Dr. Kaminsky is a Professor of Research in Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. He earned his Ph.D. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University. He also serves as Associate Director of the Belfer Gene Therapy Core Facility.

His work centers on gene therapy, which aims to treat disease by fixing problems at the genetic level. He has worked on gene therapies for rare conditions like Friedreich’s ataxia and Batten disease. Dr. Kaminsky holds more than 20 patents, has co-authored many research papers, and serves on the editorial board of Human Gene Therapy. He also helps lead national efforts to improve how gene therapy tools are made.

Why He Said Yes

Dr. Kaminsky has a personal connection to our community.

“I have known a family with a child born with ectodermal dysplasia for many years, and through that relationship I gained an appreciation of the challenges faced by individuals and families affected by the condition,” Dr. Kaminsky shared.

“Over time, I have supported the NFED in modest ways and have been encouraged to see the organization expand its efforts beyond patient support to advancing research on the underlying molecular mechanisms of ectodermal dysplasias and the development of potential therapies. As a scientist, I have often felt that I could contribute more directly to these efforts.”

He added, “The opportunity to serve on the SAC seemed like a meaningful way to apply my expertise in support of NFED’s mission and help advance research that may ultimately improve the lives of those living with ectodermal dysplasias.”

What He Brings to NFED

Dr. Kaminsky knows how to move a discovery from the lab to patients. That means careful study design and following strict safety rules for making and testing new therapies.

“I hope to contribute by drawing on more than 30 years of experience in translational research involving gene therapies, vaccines, and diagnostic technologies,” he said. “My background enables me to evaluate and advise on basic research while also helping investigators navigate the development pathway toward clinical application. This includes considerations such as rigorous study design, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), and other regulatory requirements that are essential for successfully advancing a project from the laboratory to patients.”

He is also excited about NFED’s role in supporting early research. He looks forward to “helping the NFED identify and support research opportunities with the greatest potential for long-term clinical impact.”

What This Means for Families

Every expert who joins the SAC helps us move closer to answers and, one day, treatments. Dr. Kaminsky’s skills will help our researchers take smart next steps.

Please join us in giving Dr. Kaminsky a warm NFED welcome! Together, we are building a brighter future for everyone affected by these rare conditions.
