Our Donors Are the Lifeblood of the NFED

At the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias (NFED), our donors are more than just contributors. Their ongoing support is an integral part of our community. Every gift matters and represents a connection to the NFED mission, strengthening our shared goal to enrich the lives of individuals affected by ectodermal dysplasias.

Among these dedicated supporters, our Smile Makers stand out. This special group of monthly donors ensures our work remains sustainable.

Meet a Smile Maker: George’s Story

George knows first-hand how to help his sons cope with ectodermal dysplasia.

We recently caught up with George, a long-time supporter, monthly donor, and former NFED Board member, to hear why he continues to give monthly and what inspires his ongoing commitment to the NFED.

What inspired you to become a Smile Maker?

“I was first introduced to the NFED in college when I met Mary Kaye [Richter], and it quickly became an invaluable resource for me. Living with ectodermal dysplasia, I found immense support through the NFED, especially after college. That support became even more crucial when our two sons were born with ectodermal dysplasia.

Serving on the NFED board gave me the opportunity to see firsthand the incredible impact they have—bringing hope and making a real difference for families navigating ectodermal dysplasia. Being part of that mission, even in a small way, has been a true privilege.”

What does being a monthly donor mean to you personally?

Consistency of support is key.

George, monthly donor and former NFED Board Member

As a family, we knew early on that we wanted to be part of something bigger—to contribute in a way that made a lasting impact. The NFED accomplishes so much with a small budget, and by giving monthly, we can help sustain their incredible work. It’s our way of showing that we believe in the mission of the NFED, and we want to see it thrive.”

What do you hope your monthly support helps make possible?

George and his wife, Leah, have four children.

“To me, the NFED represents hope and encouragement. A diagnosis of ectodermal dysplasia can be overwhelming, and many families struggle to find answers and navigate the challenges that come with it.

Through the NFED, families gain access to a supportive community filled with people who have walked this path before. That sense of connection is invaluable, especially for young families who may feel alone in their journey. My hope is that our support helps provide families with the resources, guidance, encouragement, and a network of people who remind them that they are never alone.”

George’s dedication reflects the spirit of so many in our Smile Maker community—individuals who give not just to support, but to make a lasting difference.

What is a Smile Maker?

A Smile Maker is a monthly donor who believes in the power of consistent, ongoing support. Their generosity provides essential funding, ensuring we can continue our mission every single month.

Our Smile Makers are the heartbeat of our organization. Their unwavering support provides more than just funding—it brings hope to the ectodermal dysplasia community. With every gift, they empower us to fulfill our mission and create a future where every patient’s voice is heard, and every story matters.
